Like her mother, Matata, Elikya is primarily used as a control subject, comparing the competencies of apes raised in a language-rich environment to those who are not. Born in 1997, Elikya, which means "hope," enjoys spending time with Nyota, who is a year younger. Elikya is quite fond of Nyota and enjoys watching him when he spends hours practicing his jumping techniques. She is proving to be an excellent caregiver. Elikya and Nyota occasionally are given the responsibility of taking care of Nathan and Maisha together while the adults have a well earned break. Her favorite foods are milk and strawberries.
