On May 28, 2000, Matata gave birth to one of the newest members of Great Ape Trust's bonobo family — Maisha. Matata delivered Maisha with little fanfare and no assistance. She cares for her child much as she has her previous seven children, and much like bonobos in the wild — mostly on their own. Now at almost five-years old, Maisha is beginning to show his independence. He enjoys chasing and playing with Nathan.
