MEET ALLIE
Azy Name: Allie
Birthday: December 30,1994
Favorite food: Green leafy vegetables
Favorite toy: Markers for drawing
Favorite activity: Having her hair combed; exploring the building
Allie, a female orangutan, was born on December 30, 1994, at the Yerkes National Primate Research Center in Atlanta, GA. She moved to the Denver Zoo in 1999. In early 2005, Allie experienced a neurological event of undetermined origin and temporarily lost the use of her arms and legs. Over time, and with excellent care and physical therapy at the Denver Zoo, her arms and hands have improved tremendously. She can now also voluntarily flex both legs, and grip with both feet. Both legs are improving, and she uses them when moving around her new home.

Since her arrival to Great Ape Trust in October 2005, Allie has shown improvements, and additional increases in function are expected. She has navigated all areas of the orangutan home and usually chooses one of the higher levels to rest and make her nest in the evening. Allie is self-sufficient, determined, and resourceful. For those of us at Great Ape Trust who have the privilege of working with her, she is also an inspiration.
